Sooo, REVIEWS THAT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN

So my dearies, I've been writing reviews more regular on other sites than here :(
So here's a small roundup of all the crap I've written since my last post.

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR: KEN'S RAGE over @ MCMBUZZ

SUPER MEAT BOY @ MIDLIFE GAMER

I've got a couple of articles coming in that are not especially reviews coming over here. Also my GOTY of 2010.

Soundtrack of the year 2010

2010 has had some awesome gaming soundtracks, and with pretty much all big, new releases out of the way I'll start my Soundtrack of the Year award! And without further ado, my soundtrack of the year is!

*DRUMROLL*

Nier’s Soundtrack is simply classic, with an orchestrated, moving soundtrack that sets the tone for the entire game. The vocal tracks in this game are amazing, while not containing any coherent lyrics per se, it does extremely well to convey the desperation and emotional aspect of the game. To be completely honest what Nier does best is music, and this sadly overlooked RPG finally gets it’s swan song. (no pun intended)
RUNNERS UP
(in no particular order)

The music in any Castlevania title has been extraordinary. And where Lords of Shadow didn't do well, Harmony of Despair did, and did it damn good. Harmony of Despair took all the Castlevania fan favourites and made a Guitar Arrangement of them, making fans squeal and wet their pants worldwide.
VVVVVV is an underrated indie platformer where you shift gravity, graphics are done in C64 style and so is the music. The catchy melodies of VVVVVV will blow your mind in all of it's chiptuney awesomeness.
Red Dead Redemption's soundtrack is a dime a dozen, instead of focusing on melodical tracks, it focuses in on the immersive experience of the game. Riding to Mexico with this track on is one of the most atmospheric moments i've ever experienced in gaming.
SMB's soundtrack is ridiculously amazing for an indie game, when it was flung into popularity a month ago, I heard about it's soundtrack. For a twitchy game like SMB, you need some sort of catchy tune to tap your feet to as you time your jumps, and DBsoundworks did an awesome job of it.

I hum/whistle this every. single. day. And for that reason it's on this list. Hell yeah! But seriously, Deadly Premonition gives us some pretty catchy and cliche Horror / Detective themes that have died out in this generation of gaming.

That's all folks!
Happy Gaming, SAYEM OUT!

I've started publishing on a website!

Hey there my good followers, i've actually started to write for MCM BUZZ
So unfortunately this site won't be updated as often as it used to.
On there now is my fantabulous Vanquish review and you should go read it. Right now.

DO EEET!
Also that really short Castlevania review landed me the MCM job. Score!

*Super Meat Boy Review coming here soon :)

- Sayem
Castlevania: Lords of shadow is the new iteration to the long running Castlevania franchise. Released for both 360 and PS3. Published by Konami, developed by Mercurystream and Kojima Productions.
This is a 3D Castlevania, which would usually make me not want to touch it AT ALL. However, Mercurystream hit gold with this 3D Castlevania. The only way to describe this game with other game names would be “Uncharted Colossus of War-Vania” Which, in itself is a pretty awesome name.

The basic gist of this Castlevania game is not connected to the rest of the franchise, but despite what the devs say, there are always theories. You play as Gabriel Belmont, a man who is grieving over the loss of his wife who was killed by creatures that are invading the 12th Century Earth.
This sets up the rest of this game's story. The ending is simply one of the best game endings I have ever witnessed. It's a pretty solid story overall and is a fantastic addition to the strengths of this game, also it's narrated by Patrick Stewart, which makes it awesome in it's calibre.

Graphics in this game are simply sublime, the textures feel very high quality, amazing in action and I could not believe my eyes, this game is also chock full of FMV's which are movie quality and shows that those 2 discs on 360 are there for a reason. However, the framerate suffers for this quality, there are visible drops and the game does not “flow” properly, although it gets better in later chapters in the game. This is a letdown and I feel that they could have pushed for a stable over 30 FPS for the entire game.

The actual Gameplay of this is a hybrid of sorts, this game is pretty linear but leaves things in each stage so you can return to it and reap their rewards. The main “battle” system in Castlevania is pretty standard action adventure fare, God of war style but you unlock various moves throughout the game and the action flows very nicely. In addition to this is light and dark magic, which serve their own purposes such as restoring health, solving the surprisingly good puzzles and others within the game. The Platforming is pretty solid, and reminiscent of the Uncharted series, although the glaring “JUMP HERE” shiny tiles are pretty distracting, maybe on an easier difficulty that would be appropriate, but for me. Not on a normal difficulty.

Overall, Castlevania: Lords of shadow Is a solid game, it has good, but not memorable music, progressive gameplay that feels satisfying as you go along. The production value for this game is noticeably high and it shows. Although it has it's downfalls such as the framerate issues and the condescending platforming. Castlevania: Lords of shadow deserves attention. It's has solid mechanics, simply beautiful graphics and it's a shame that this will be forgotten in the coming months.

Review: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3/360)

Final Fantasy XIII, I waited to do this review because I felt that I could project bias if I reviewed it straight after release, so 6 months later. Here I am. And I'm glad I waited. It got all of the OMG NEW FF DJASHDJSAHDASSD out of my system. That said. FFXIV has just come out...

FFXIII is one of “those” games, which have an amazing production value, are beautiful and of course bearing the “Final Fantasy” name makes it have a lot to live up to in terms of fanbase and quality of previous work.
FFXIII Is a game that holds your hand for around 20 hours, then throws you into a dual carriageway, forcing you to become frogger and master dodging cars, to put it simply.
The gameplay in FFXIII is fantastic, I will say this outright, no other Final Fantasy has kept me on my toes as much as this. The battle system is known as the Paradigm System. And what this lets you do is to switch the “Class” of your party collectively.

Basically, in the old FF's, you could assign a class to your party, in the later FF's, you could change the class and kind of “evolve”. Then, even later. The classes were preassigned to the character. And now it's all newfangled and very hard to explain. So, you have several classes. “Ravager” Which builds the chain gauge up, making your damage go higher. To stabilize the gauge, you use a “commando” which attacks and maintains the gauge. But does higher physical damage. Next up is Medic... which can heal your status ailments and heal you. Pretty self explanatory. After that is Sentinel. Which can divert the enemy attention to the Sentinel, and make sure the enemy attacks that, putting less pressure on the other 2 characters. The other 2 classes, Synergist and Saboteur Buff you and debuff the enemy respectively.
The way you do this is by assigning each character a class, then this makes your “paradigm” or Strategy. You can have upto 5 Paradigms for each battle. And have to prepare them before battle.

My gripe with this was, that whenever I switched up my party, I lost all the paradigms which I had previously (which makes sense) But I wish I could have saved a Paradigm list or something that saves me the hassle of sorting out my paradigms every time I change something.

The way actual battles work is to queue up your attacks and each attack takes up an ATB segment, sometimes you have multi segment attacks, others are singular segment. This works nicely, but there is also an auto attack button, which does all that for you, it's not recommended to do in the later parts of the game and I agree with it, you will need to make those decisions and tailor your strategies.
The thing is, it doesn't actually get that hard until about 5 hours into the game, before that you could just mash the auto attack to win. For me that's wayyy too long for an RPG game to get started. For me, one and a half hours or so in Persona4 was enough. And that's just unlocking the battle system capabilities.

The overworld is freaking beautiful, the graphics are literally 10 out of 10, I was absolutely stunned by the fact that they could pull something this amazing out, there are various settings you go through in FFXIII, and I didn't find a single ugly looking setting, seriously. It's breathtaking. The lighting and set peices are phenomenal. By far one of the best looking games this generation, right next to Uncharted 2 and Red Dead Redemption. Except for the fingers of the characters, they look like chips.
The FMV's in the game are absolutely stunning in 1080p although they are only there at the starts/ends of chapters, they look just. Fantastic.

Sound design in FFXIII is different to previous ones, Nobuo Uematsu did not do this score, and I regard him to be a staple of the FF series as much as chocobo's. So I was skeptical on the score of FFXIII before going in... but boy how wrong I was. The score for Final Fantasy XIII is as amazing as the graphics are, while not as catchy as it's predecessors, still holds up on it's own, with a varying range of audio genre's and depth to the music.
The addition of Leona Lewis' “My hands” to the ending wasn't all that bad, I feel it fit quite well personally.

The plot in FFXIII is frustratingly predictable, for me, the story just limited it's scope and the way things and features could have been added, the scenario didn't allow for certain opportunities such as towns! A major part of any FF game, I hope this gets rectified in FFXIII Versus.
I was amazingly disappointed with it, considering that FFVI possibly has the best story in any Videogame. And that the FF name should be synonymous with the words “Good” and “story”

The Characters are extremely bland and whiny, each one has their own plot “arc” per se. Most of them are generally unlikeable and most forgettable. With the exception of Sazh, who (in my eyes) Was a character I related to most, and one I genuinely cared for. Even if he was there for comedic relief.
Snow on the other hand... I made a TubeDub that pretty much sums it up, I'm sorry that I can't embed this though. Snow's character is overly confident and generally a big meathead asshole who thinks he's a hero. But with the best of intentions, of course.

The level design in FFXIII is Linear, and has been called out on this a lot. It's a very famous criticism of this game, but I feel that the scenario of the game MADE it linear. The people are on the run for god's sake, you cant expect them to walk into a freaking town. But I called the story out for limiting the game like that. So FFXIII doesn't really open up until you get to chapter 11, where you are let off of your leash and you can do whatever you want in this vast space. But there is a Huuuge difficulty spike. I had to grind to get out of it, which in my eyes is never good, as the game should level you accordingly to the difficulty of the game, it's understandable however if you avoid every battle to come your way though, there are 2 noticeable difficulty spikes, and they both detriment to the experience and the overall feel of the game.

Final Fantasy XIII only truly opens up until around 20 hours in, that's when the game “really” gets going. And that's inexcuseable. But therein, the game is extremely enjoyable if you take away the plot or don't take it seriously. This game has both very good and bad points to it. My advice to anyone that wants to play this is that; you should play it if you are willing to brush over the mediocre story and the mainly linear maps. The gameplay in itself is fantastic and the graphics are the best in the business. While Final Fantasy XIII does not live up to the "Final Fantasy" name, but is a good game in its own right.

Review: Hori Fighting Stick 3 (PS3)

Arcade Sticks are usually used to play fighting games or arcade style shoot-em-up's, in my case I bought one to play fighting games with, and I chose the Hori Fight Stick 3 for the Playstation 3.

This is an entry level arcade stick intended for newcomers or people who do not want to fork out copious amounts of money for a fighting game controller.
So, the Hori FS3 is a piece of kit. It's weighty but quite small for an arcade stick and does the job well. It also comes with a turbo function with three different modes. “Slow” That goes 5 times per second, “Normal” Which does 12 times a second and finally “fast” Which is 21 times per second. This function is usually used for shmups so I think it's cheating if you use it in a fighting game.
The Joystick on the Hori FS3 is very smooth and you can feel the clicks of the microswitches confirming the direction you are going in, the stick uses a Square gate. Which means you can move the joystick around in a square kind of direction, this can all be replaced with higher quality Sanwa or Seimitsu Parts.
The buttons are very responsive and react with the lightest of touches, The layout of the buttons is a standard HORI layout, which is different to the Vewlix Layout which the Madcatz Arcade sticks use.
The quality of the parts is not comparable to that of Sanwa Or Seimitsu, but for beginners and newcomers like me, these should be enough. And If the need arises, you can replace the entire innards of the stick with higher quality parts if you wish.

My experience with switching to an arcade stick for Street Fighter and Blazblue is hard, because the actual handing is very different to that of the xbox 360 or DualShock 3 pads. Initially, there is a big learning curve to overcome while converting from a Pad to Arcade stick, but the pro's of owning a stick for Fighting games outweigh the Cons. While there are very big growing pains and the stick takes a LOT of getting used to in terms of actual execution of moves and even simple movements like Dragon Punches or Hadokens. But After you get used to the stick you start to see the improvements over the pad. Inputs are a lot faster. If I were to compare it, playing with a pad compared to a stick is like trying to play Piano with your thumbs. The Arcade stick Lets you be a lot faster in terms of reactions and overall execution of moves. It's well worth getting an arcade stick if you are serious about getting good at fighting games.

Overall, the Hori FS3 is a nice investment for me, It's a nice little stick that just does the job you want it to. Although not as high quality as the HRAP3 Or the Tournament Edition arcade sticks. It does the job and it does it damn good.

So, Demon's Souls. This game was released in February 2009 in Japan, March in Asia which also had a English language option, America in September. And finally Europe in June 2010.
So, as you can see this game is nearly one and a half years old. Due to this many people imported the Asian version or the American version. But even so, the game still did extremely well in the UK especially. Coming 6th in the Charts beating the likes of Transformers and Just dance(!)
I was thinking of buying this game as soon as it came out in America, it became a cult hit of sorts there. But alas, I waited patiently.

So, Demon's Souls is not an ordinary game, well. Not one that you see today anyway. This game is brutal. And I do not kid when I say it's brutal. This game can and will kick your ass. Most modern game developers want to make games more accessible these days, whereas FROM Software tosses all that out and makes you appreciate games again.
Video games today are generally more easy then they were in say. The 90's in the platformer days. games like the Mega Man series were hard, but not unfair. When you die, it's your fault and you know it. The same goes for Demon's Souls. Which is hard to say for a videogame these days because of the shift into 3D and general mainstreaming of gaming.

There is hardly any story to speak of in Demon's Souls. Usually I would list this as a bad thing but I think it works very well here as not much really needs to be explained. The Atmosphere of the game kind of fuels the whole story and the setting. I think that It would be nice if there was more dialogue in the game or more story elements. But I don't think it was a necessary thing to do to enjoy the game. The Gameplay is what makes this game.
What Demon's Souls also doesn't do is hold your hand through the whole game like say, Assassins Creed. You have a single level tutorial and that's it. You're on your own. Not to mention you get mauled in one hit by a boss at the end of said tutorial and die like a bitch.
Dying in Demon's Souls is a big deal unlike most games today. Basically, you have two forms in this game. Body form and Soul Form. In body form you have Full health. And when you die, you enter Soul form, where you have half health. And to get Body form back again, you have to defeat a boss or Have a Stone of Ephemeral eyes, which are extremely rare. Another consequence of dying is that you lose all of your “souls” which is your currency and experience points, and they are left at the point where you died. But you only have one shot at getting them back. Because your bloodstain disappears. And with hat all of your souls. So yeah, dying matters. A LOT.
You start right back at the start of the level too. So you have to trek your way through the whole level, get to your bloodstain and regain your souls and then progress. It's harsh, gritty, full of atmosphere and the danger of even normal enemies around the corner waiting to ambush you makes you put thought into your every move and step. It's a magnificent thing that is generally not done in many other games today.

Dying is just a small part of the gameplay in Demon's Souls. The actual play is taken from a third person perspective, and shares a lot of parallels with the 3-D Zelda Series, with locking on and focusing on one enemy rather then most other third person action games such as God Of war and Dynasty Warriors. It's also similar to Oblivion in the fact that you use stamina and Magic to time your attacks, but the Actual battle and attack system is a lot more refined and is possibly the most balanced, perfect battle system I know. When you get countered and your guard has broken, you know you could have done that better and not gotten hit. Dodging and rolling is tight too, you know how far, how long it will take and will help you calculate your strategies accordingly.

When you mess up in timing your attack or whatever, you KNOW it's your fault. There are a plethora of different enemies in Demon's Souls and none of them are crappy reskins, you have to Learn the patterns of the enemies and fight accordingly. If you expect slash slash run run win win, you're don't know what you're getting into.

Online in Demon's Souls is a very unique experience. You can watch other players play through the same level as you as a white ghost in their own realm, and read messages that they have left for you on the floor. You can even touch their bloodstain and see the last 30 seconds of their life. It's a fantastic addition to the game. Direct player interaction is done by summoning someone into your world as a blue phantom or going into someone elses world as a blue phantom to help then In a level.
This is fantastic as Help from other players is always helpul. And they also get their body back if they Beat the boss with you during the level. On the flipside of this is Black Phantoms. Who can break into your world and hunt you down. It's exhillarating being invaded by another black phantom. I had a duel with someone that lasted well over an hour. It was like nothing I had ever experienced in a game before, We were both fighting for our Lives and souls. It's the same rush you get while fighting someone in a fighting game like street fighter but more intense.

The Graphics in Demon's Souls are good, not phenomenal. But Adequate for the whole style and setting, which is In a seemingly medieval kingdom. And I feel that it takes a lot of it's style from Morrowind or Oblivion, both which are made by western developers and both in the Elder scrolls series. For a one and a half year old game. I think for it's time it was damn good. However the Anti aliasing in the game is bad and you can seelots of Jaggy pixels on weapons and some stages, it's something I want them to improve on in the inevitable sequel.

So, Music. This game came with it's soundtrack in the “Black Phantom Edition” version of the game and there isn't actually much music in the game itself. In the stages there is actually no music. Which is nice for atmosphere and all. But I find myself listening to other music that fits in with Demon's Souls (Susumu Hirasawa)
But when you DO hear music is during boss fights. And because of the scarcity of music in the game, when you do hear it. It gets you pumped for the upcoming fight. It adds a whole other level of atmosphere due to that technique of scarcity with the music. A great example of how it feels is to read my Demon's Souls experience beloe, I think that it portrays how music fits into the game perfectly.

In retrospect, Demon's Souls is the best game I have ever played, the mechanics are all tight. The Boss fights feel like Boss fights. It's brutal, and also the hardest game I have ever played. It's very hard to find flaws in this game. This game is truly a classic. FROM Software really pushed the boundaries of game design with this. And I applaud them for that. Demon's Souls is a must have for anyone that owns a PS3. Seriously. You will either love or hate this game. The Challenge that it puts you through really shows the true nature of this generation of checkpoints and no game overs.
It's a Niche title. But If you stick with it, it really pays off.

Demon's Souls, The Beginning.

I Looked around me in the secluded hallway, I saw my Blue phantom companion next to me bow.
There was a foggy gate ahead of us, as we entered. A choir of singers belted out an epic song as the camera panned around the 30 metre tall knight that we stood before. A plethora of archers surrounded us.
I quickly ran up the stairs on the right, and my companion on the left. I ran to the archers as they attempted to shoot my with their armour piercing arrows. Luckily I defeated them. And met my counterpart in the middle. Where the gargantuan knight await us. The Choir of voices made everything seem more intense and on the edge.
We ran back down the stairs and Rolled out of the way of the Knights attack. MY companion Ran toward it's Achilles heel where he attacked with him broadsword, as I attacked with my Soul arrows in the same area.
MY companion took a hit and was pierced by the knights gigantic spear. In order to save him, I diverted attention from him to myself by recklessly running in front of the knight to get it's attention while he had time to heal.

I was hit by the knight's shield, however my companion came to aide by attacking it's heel once more.
The knight lost its footing and fell backwards, onto the ground. We both pelted toward the now fallen gargantuan knights head. I equipped my Bastard sword and swung with all my might, the knight took damage but got back up again, I dodged out of the way of his attack, however. Unbeknownst to me, had hit my companion. My companion didn't have enough time to heal himself and was crushed under the knight's shield.

Now alone, I had to face this gargantuan monster. I belted toward the stairs and targeted the Knight to hit him with my Soul Arrows. His Achilles heel seemed to be his weak spot. And doing ranged attacks was the only way to get him to fall down again in order for me to do massive damage to it's head. However in this method I quickly ran out of mana to cast my soul arrows. I panicked and rand down the stairs to rush him with my Sword. I got hit due to being wreckless. I got up with a lither of health left. Saw the Knight starting to lunge his Spear into me, and quickly rolled out of the way. Ran behind him and started to attack his heel once more.
I was careless, as I didnt look after my sword. And as I Swung for the Enemy. I hit a wall and my sword shattered. The top of the screen was flashing WEAPON BROKEN!
I had to find some way of defeating this demon. The chorus belting out as always. Just adding to the pressure of this. I ran toward the stairs in a final burst of energy. I was almost hit in the back by the gargantuan spear, but luckily I ran up the stairs before it could hit me. I healed myself and entered into the indoor hallway where the knight could not attack me. I opened my inventory in a hurry and looked for the old spice. Something that could replenish my mana, and let me use my soul arrows again.
I consumed the spice, now with 5 soul arrows left. I boldly left the hallway and ran back down the stairs. The Knight Crashed his shield down onto the floor. However I dodged it and got out of the way. I targeted his Achilles heel again and attacked four times. Bringing his health down to a meager dot on the bar.
I was hit by his spear several time while running around him, I had One shot left. Everything I worked for so far in this fight, lead up to this deciding moment. As The knight lunged toward me. I Targeted His head. And cast my final soul arrow.
I gambled, and it worked. The knight fell onto it's knees and dissapeared. I belted “YES!” At the top of my lungs as the chorus faded and the area was in complete silence.I read a message left by another player by the carcass of the dead Tower Knight. It read;
“The True Demon's Souls starts here”

Review: Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4 (PS2)

Ahh, Persona 4. My estranged journey with this game started around December 2008. Where In Europe Persona 3: FES had been released a few months prior. And I caught wind that the fourth iteration of the series would be out in March. So, instead of seeking out the extremely hard to find P3:FES, I waited for the release of P4. I got it a few days after launch in March. And finished this January. The reason for the lengthy time of this was that I got frustrated when I lost a lot of data due to making bad decisions and just put the game down (will touch upon this later) My finished Game time was around 200 hours.

Considering you've read the story primer. You should know what I'm on about in this section.
The story in Persona 4 Is fantastic, not is there only the ongoing murder investigation you are doing, there are sections where you can bond with your friends, this is called Social Linking, or S.Link for short. This helps to develop the characters backstories and backgrounds. It really makes you bond and relate to all of the characters. While not being Evangelion style deep. The Characters do put on a very good show and with every twist and turn of the plot, it helps you to see each individual character's real thoughts and each one's vastly different personality.
The cast of Persona 4 are very good, In Terms of average JRPG casts, and the horrifyingly bad FFXIII cast. Persona 4 really gives you a sense of depth to each character and their insecurities.
I think this is helped by the way each on gets their own persona. By “facing themself” with their true thoughts and feelings.
This helps paint a picture that not all people are perfect, and that everyone has their own little personal stuggles they have to go against. And how their problems can consume their thoughts and overall, mental wellbeing.
I think that this game delves into the controversial aspect of human thought, Supressed feelings. It deals with these accordingly. And the aspect of facing all of your supressed thoughts in front of people is horrifying, to say the least. So from this almost traumatic Experience, you bond and develop with these characters.
As far fetched as it may seem, even a cuddly bear has identity issues :'(

As for the story in itself, I do not want to spoil it for anyone, but I can say that your choices affect every single aspect of the game, the twists and false red herrings. They're all up to your own personal judgement. Even to the point where I lost 20 hours of play-time due to making bad decisions in the past. And I have to say. It does a damn good job of keeping tabs on all the suspects, how everything pans out and the overall outcome of the game feels very satisfying. The story and storytelling of this game is on par with greats of storytelling games. It all feels completely natural and nothing feels forced overall.
Overall, the story of this game is really what gives it its drive, everything covers and resonates into this whole fantastic experience.

The gameplay is extremely varied in Persona 4. Of course there is a basic battle system in the traditional, turn based RPG style. It has normal, physical attacks with your weapon, or an attack with your Persona/(ae)
Basically, persona are your elemental attacks or strong physical attacks other then your normal attack. And to use your persona you use up your HP bar, and your SP bar. SP bar is for your Elemental attacks, and HP bar for the physical attacks. So you Have to watch your HP if you want to use your persona's physical attacks all of the time. The main character that you Control throughout the whole game can use up to 16 persona, and normal characters only use one All of these persona have different attributes and level up independently depending on their usage, and learn new attacks and get stronger as they level up.

The way elements are incorporated into persona is that like pokemon, where essentially it's a big game of rock-paper-scissors. Get the enemy's weakness, and down them, then rush them. Is the basic strategy. It does get more complex then that later on, with need to buff and debuff characters and bosses to boost their stats to deal massive damage or hamper their strength.

The “social links” in this game act as a double whammy of sorts, initiating them help you in battle in numerous ways, such as your team mates taking a fatal hit for you, or helping you up after you are knocked down. Or even asking to preform their Special attack after an enemy is down.
Another aspect where this helps is during persona fusion, but we will get onto that later.
Social links help develop the characters in the world of Persona 4. Most people you meet in persona 4 who has a drawn character usually has a social link attached with them at some point. It helps you be enveloped into this world and help you understand characters more. As I pointed out earlier.

Each Persona has something called an Arcana. And each arcana corresponds to a type of persona and a Social Link.
By Levelling up social links. You can gain EXP upgrades to newly fused persona from Persona Fusion.
Basically, you can fuse your persona into a single, more powerful card. These fusions can take 2 – 6 persona fusion spreads. And initially you can only do a 2 spread and 3 spread fusion, but as your character levels up, you gain more spread. However you can only fuse Persona that are lower or the same as your Main Character's level. This is why it's useful to level up your Social link to get an EXP boost after fusion.
At times in the game when I was stuck, I tried to fuse a Quadruple spread persona, and it was alright, but to get Persona to fuse to that Certain one, I had to enter into previous Dungeons and “hunt” for these persona to fuse. I found this more fun then frustrating. As It's a deep and complex mechanic. But all in all. It really pays off.

The way this game plays out is that you gradually get more and more complex as the Main Character Levels up. This works pretty well I think.
The learning curve at the start of this game is STEEP. It's really difficult to begin with and felt quite grindy. This is by no means an easy game to play and slog through. This will game can and WILL kick your ass when you least expect it. Considering it's a Shin Megami Tensei game, I wasn't surprised by the level of difficulty thrown at me. At the start of the game they even said that the “Normal” mode was for seasoned gamers.
One weakness to the game was that if the Main Character died, it was game over. I felt that this was kind of weak, because when you plan out your battle strategy, you have to take into account that the Main Character is your most valuable asset. And it's hard to juggle managing the whole team's attacks and the monsters weakness while keeping an eye out to see if dear MC is out of health/SP. And I think reflecting upon this, that you had to really struggle through some fights. As bosses had cheap attacks that could OH-KO me. Initially, this felt really cheap. And I actually put the game down for a number of months after Then again I didn't S.Link enough so that my team mates could take a hit for me... So, eventually. It all comes down to play style.

How you S.Link and Enter the TV world to go dungeoneering makes it that the day is split into parts, and you have to balance these parts accordingly. For example. You cannot social link after School AND go Into the TV. So this makes for some big decisions in the long run.
Another way the game puts pressure into your long term thinking is that you have a time limit to get through a dungeon, and you can only spot this end when it's Three rainy days in a row, and I have to admit I did get caught once, which is deeply frustrating as you may have made a save beforehand the day before and not had any “backup” saves. Forcing you to start the game from scratch, luckily I had backup saves dating Two weeks before. Which was about 20 hours of gameplay. So, the game forces you to act and bide your time wisely and to not waste time.
On top of this is that the MC has his own Stats, which you have to level up as time goes on and lack of these stats can hamper your S.Link progress by “not having enough courage” to do something rash in a S.Link scenario. So, the pressure is on pretty much.

The Artstyle in this game is what makes everything come full circle. The theme of Yellow's and blacks really give it a nice, light-hearted feel. This is reflected in the music too.
The music is reminiscent of summery J-POP/Rock and it fits really well into the game's context. Although I can never listen to the battle theme ever again due to it being played in my ears too much throughout the course of the game.
What I thought was smart about the music in this game was that in a Certain dungeon, the lyrics reflected upon the person that was kidnapped. And it's an awesome song to boot!

The graphics in this game are impressive for a Ps2 hardware game. Due to being released late in the lifecycle. I was surprised they fit this whole game into one single DVD! (I'm not sure if it's dual layer or not) Although nothing compared to greats like uncharted 2. The games graphics do suffice for it's anime styling.

Overall, Persona 4 is probably the best game I have ever played. Hours of enjoyable playtime, a fun plotline that doesnt take itself TOO seriously, a nice musical score to accompany this. And deep and complex gameplay that made me feel pressured to finish it. I think that Persona 4 Is a brilliant timesink into amazing gameplay, story and score. If I were to say anything bad about this game it would be the length of the goddamn cutscene at the start of the game. One and a half hours, not cool man.
Because I dont give games scores. I usually leave it upto the readers interpretation as I feel it's not good to rate a game on a system like that.
I would give Persona 4 all the numbers in the world. It's literally the culmination of everything I find fun in a game. If you have a PS2 or a 60GB PS3. Do not hesitate to pick this one up. It's well worth your time.

Shin Megami Tensei : Persona 4 Review Story Primer

So, Persona 4. You start off as a transfer student to the fictional rural town of Inaba, in Japan.
You get picked up by your Uncle and His daughter, whom you will live with throughout the course of this game. You will make friends and meet your fellow classmates...
This is where It gets interesting.
There is one of those cliché rumours going around school, That you can see your soul mate if you look into a TV at midnight. You and your new friends all try this. And all see the same person.
However, you try to touch the T.V and your hand goes straight through the TV.
The next day you tell your friends about this and they are in short. WTF'd out. When you are walking back home that day. A dead body appears on top of a TV satellite aerial. She was also the person you saw on the T.V.
Everyone passes this incident off as a coincidence. But your friends are still intrigued about how you fit your hand through a TV. So they take you to a department store your friend owns and you try to show your two friends you can go into the TV.
And it does.
Freaked out, they try to do it. And they can as well. You all fall into another world from going into the TV.
You try to navigate yourself around this strange world and find a room, with blood slashes all across it, with a noose in the middle and a single picture of the actress who died recently.
You and co. try to get out of there ASAP.
You encounter a strange bear who then leads you out. (to put it short, hahah)

That night, you watch the “midnight channel” Again and you spot someone you recognise.
She dies the next day, you and co. see if the Deaths and the TV are related, you try to go in with one other friend and another in the real world holding you by a rope, you also go in armed this time.
Friend in real world lets go after you jump in.
You enter the TV World, you explore, looking for clues about recent death, you encounter Another Yosuke And he starts talking the truth about himself. He starts to deny it.
The Negative thoughts being projected resonate into a BOSSS FIIIGGHHTTT
You're faced with a Giant monster thing. You're about to die and DEUS EX MACHINA OCCURS!
You Utter the words persona and a card appears, you crush said card. And huge “persona” comes out. The way to describe this is a pokemon like thing, and you can attack with it.

You beat the boss, friend gets a persona.
/queue rest of game and Murder mystery.

Now for the ACTUAL Review...

Anime review : Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the galactic heroes AKA: (銀河英雄伝説 / Ginga Eiyū Densetsu )

Where to start with this gargantuan OVA. The release spanned over 10 years and there are one hundred and TEN! Episodes.
So, as you can probably tell. Ite pretty old and long.
To Outline the story of LOGH, two factions have been warring for galactic superiority. And you follow two brilliant minds. (one on each side of the factions)

Now, this setup might seem cliché, but the skirmishes and Battles in LOGH are on fantastic scales. And much of the warfare is done as if they were at sea, which is pleasant because during the battles a tactician might show a diagram of the stratagem they will use, although some of them do not go to plan, and I have to say. There is not much action in LOGH, but it sure keeps you hooked because you will know that some of the outcomes of these skirmishes or battles will drastically change the whole direction of the show.

The cast in LOGH is extremely expansive. I have to say, it is also one of the most impressive casts of any piece of fiction I have ever seen or read. Every single character gets development, every character has their own little backstory. And something to also mention is that every character has an original voice actor, you will never hear two people with the same voice in this show. That's extremely impressive considering you have around 30-40 Main characters within the show. The best thing is, the writer was not afraid to kill off developed characters.

The two main characters; Reinhard von Musel And Yang Wen-li are both gifted minds (within the story of course, haha ) And they both face their own hardships and while none of them are “good” or “bad” You will end up sympathising for one of them more then the other.
Indeed, the characters in LOGH are extremely deep and you will feel like you personally know them every time they come on screen. For example; Throughout the series you see Yang wen-li drinking tea, however there is a certain point where he is served tea, and just stares at it blankly because he only has his tea “this way” or “that way”. It's this kind of depth that the character has In LOGH that really gives them a flaring personality. No doubt you will be able to relate to some of the situations put forward in LOGH too.

The Soundtrack to LOGH is done by Germany Symphony Orchestra (correct me if I'm wrong)
and it just sounds magnificent when drawn to the political and warfare side of things in this series.
The fact that it fits well and still isn't some tacky techno-jpop makes me happy. Even the Openings and endings mean something in LOGH. If you watch the first opening, predominantly its just faces moving. However when you get to the second, third and fouth openings. It displays the various things going on in characters lives and so on. It's subtle, but brilliant.

The animation in LOGH differs depending on what episode you are on as I said before, it was released over the course of 10 years, and there is great difference if you compare episode 1 to 110.
But it is quite fluid and nice for it's time.

There is not a lot I can say about LOGH without spoiling it. But it is truly, the greatest anime to have ever been released. I really cannot express this enough, even if you have half a brain you will be able to follow the narrative and political aspect of the whole show (which is a LOT)
I feel that it cannot be plugged enough, and should be up there with the great “Mature” anime With Death note and Gantz.

Overall, I feel that 110 episodes were worth it, very, very worth it. Not only do you get a deep, engrossing story with well developed characters. There are also twists and turns where just as you think; “Alright, this is getting boring, I've had enough”
IT completely catches you by surprise and you just fall prey to the beast that is LOGH.
It's a fantastic anime, the best I have ever watched. There are also side stories and movies to accompany the OVA.
I really cannot stop recommending this to anyone who comes my way, even though most are deterred by the longevity of the series, it is worth watching. It will pay off.
Personally, this is my favourite piece of fiction of well, all time. You will not be disappointed if you watch this. I guarantee you.

Quick Review : Darksiders (PS3/360)

So, my first encounter with Darksiders was with  gaming press saying "its a god of war clone, no it's a Zelda, no por-" et cetera et cetera.
To my recollection, it was released sometime in January and was the first "big" game of 2010.
Intrigued, I rented the game for a week, back in January. Personally for me I thought that everything in it was juuuust right, unfortunately. My time with the game was over before I realised it started.
So, back in late March I saw it going on the cheap and snapped it up.

First off, this game's art style is amazing, comic book artist Joe Mad was the creative director for the game.
It somehow reminds me of Gears of war with the HUGE BULKY HERO. But that's not even a bad point of the game as it fits within the context for the game anyway, there really needs to be an artbook for this game, if you look up some of teh concepts on  Creative uncit there is a LOT of awesome stuff right there. To be fair I'm surprised that an artbook never happened.
As for the story of the game, it's no RPG mammoth, however it keeps you "going" as you are intrigued by the whole setting and twists the plot turns towards. It starts off with all of humanity getting killed off- pleasant.

Gameplay is extremely varied in Darksiders, with Puzzle solving, button mashing, portals, and boomerangs.
I wouldn't say that the puzzles in Darksiders are BAD, It's just relatively simple to get through most dungeons using not much intelligence at all. And they implement the strange mix of using some of the weapons into then a la the Legend of Zelda 3-D Series, (OOT, MM, WW, TP)
I might mention Zelda a lot during this, but what the hell. They are both extremely similar.
The combat of Darksiders is cookie cutter stuff, it feels quite "tacked on" but still, the combat seems to be extremely challenging (for me anyway, who is new to this button mashing business)  although most Combinations and attacks were done with the Square and Triangle buttons. It's good enough for the game and still be enjoyable, You can also purchase more moves from the shop allowing for more intricate combos, although this usually turns into the normal IMMA MASH THE BUTTON RRARRAGH!
Early on in the game you only have a few Lifestones, so I initially has getting slaughtered on the normal difficulty mode against the first boss fight, but practice makes perfect as everyone says.

The weapons that you can acquire throughout the game seems to scream "LETS EXPERIMENT WITH ALL THIS AWESOME STUFF"
And what can I say, most of these are cool concepts brought to life. Such as the portal gun. As far as I know it's the first implementation of the portals inside a game outside of, well. Portal.
I draw a line to Zelda again as the whole game seems to just be a reskinned Zelda. But this is not a bad thing by any means. It uses and implements all of these Extremely well, and I have to credit the Developers for that as this is a game that scratches a specific itch for me.
The dungeons are very well done and has a certain polish to them. The level Design in this game is VERY up to scratch and you can find lifestones (heartpieces) if you just look hard enough, the world is very open and pleasant to explore. some of the secret things are usually guarded by a simple puzzle. Souls are the main surrency for the game, you earn them by killing anything and everything, you can also open chests and get a truckload of them, you can purchase various things at the shop, such as weapons and other "combo" moves. which just happen as you mash, naturally.

                                                                                  " War killing stuff. Awesome."

As for the Graphics of Darksiders, it's nothing phenomenal. But it isn't bad. It does the job pretty well for the combat systems to work well.A few issues with anti aliasing here and there, but aside from that. It looks pretty mediocre.  And for being a multiplat, it runs pretty goddamn well. But I hear there are some frame rate issues on the Xbox 360 Version of this game.

Overall, Darksiders is a strange mish mash of different games put together, the execution of this is excellent. By all means, play the demo which contains the first dungeon of the game, you will be surprised by the length of it. I fully understand how this To other people might look extremely bad, however most of them are comparing it to games like God of war and Devil May Cry, it's definitely not like any of these games, similarities? yes. But do not expect That style of game all over.
Make your own judgement on this game, but I feel that it is a very Niche market that this game is aiming towards. But if you are a Fan of the Zelda series of games, this one is a must have!

Pokemon Black + White news

So, pokemon Black and white was announced a while ago now, but I didn't say anything because there was nothing to Judge, I guess.
But today A popular Japanese Pokemon program "Pokemon Sunday" Showed some footage of the battle system and the battle system with the new starters.

So, After those two videos I think that Game Freak is going for a new experience with these two games.
As they said in some interview which I REAALLY cannot be bothered to cite at this point in time. And ontop of that the graphics have been kind of downgraded to low 3-D a la FFVII but there is a different viewpoint which gives the maps a sense of depth. I think that this is good on Game Freak's part for trying to do something new for the franchise but I dont know who it will be taken by the hardcore fans.
I prefer the old style graphics rather then 3-D because 2-D stuff is beautiful when done right.

What Impressed me the most is the new battle thingy, there are individual animations for each pokemon and their attacks. This hasnt been done before in terms of pokemon, but in other RPG's such as Golden Sun which was an Old GBA game made by Camelot in 2001. They had animated sprites in their battle system... So in that sense the Pokemon battle system was extremely outdated.
All In all I wont make a complete judgement on the whole system until I actually play it myself. But I was impressed how they pushed the game and added new features like that. But it's also a bit too late because a game made 9 years ago has done the same thing.

Sayem out!

Review: SUPERR STREET FIGHTEERRR FOUUURRR!!! (PS3/360)

Well, this is a game that really doesn't need an introduction, Capcom's flagship fighting game pretty much created the genre with Street Fighter 2 In arcades and home consoles in the early nineties and was spoilt in GREAT SUCCESS. So much they made a horrible
live action movie. Oh dear.

More to the point, Last year the fighting game scene was revitalised, not only with Street fighter IV. But various other games Such as Arc System Works' Blazblue (creators of guilty gear), King of Fighters XII and Tekken 6.
Now, a year on. Street Fighter IV pretty much reigned Champion above all of these fighters, so naturally. Capcom announced their new iteration of this game with various new characters and tweaks to gameplay/new gameplay modes.

I will not scrutinize Capcom for doing it this early because well, all fighters seem to have some new iteration of sorts a while after about a year or so. So its a tradition.
In my case, I only got a PS3 with the launch of the Slim in September, so I have missed quite a truckload of games, including SFIV.
So the release of SSFIV was the perfect opportunity to get to grips with this game properly.

Street fighter is what you call a 2-D fighting game as there is only a X and Y axis to move across, therefore mostly 2D graphics have been used in previous titles like Third strike and the Alpha series, but SFIV decided to switch it up a bit by having 3-D models fighting on a 2d landscape. And I have to say that it fits the game perfectly. It retains that street fighter aura that you get when playing some of the older games, although they are not as great as say, FFXIII. It does the job.
However some of the newer 2-D fighters like KOF and Blazblue look absolutely GLORIOUS in HD, because all of the sprites are very fluid and in VERY high resolutions. But who the hell plays fighters for the graphics?! onto the actual gameplay...

Street Fighter is a game accessible to both newcomers, and seasoned greats such as Alex Valle and Umehara Daigo, which is what makes it so great!
SSFIV has the typical 2-D fighting buttons with things such as Light, medium and heavy Punches and kicks. And taking that to a further level is that you can tie the direction your character is going in and a respective Light/med/Heavy Punch or kick to do a technique.
Taking this to a further level are "focus" Attacks, wherein you leave yourself open, but can take the hit and counter. This can be increased in complexity by doing Focus cancels, which are where you can preform an attack, cancel the frames in between by focusing, and chaining that into another attack. There is a LOT more depth to the system then is visually apparent in the actual game.
Of course the classic characters are all in there from the start, unlike Vanilla SFIV where you have to unlock all of the characters.
In my opinion it worked extremely well compared to say, Tekken 6 where All the characters were unlocked from the start and I really had no drive to "do" anything with the game. Whereas SSFIV Brings things such as the "trials" where you test your skills to do combos against a dummy. The Bonus stages make a comeback in this version of SFIV. where you break barrels and smash cars, it's a nice retro touch that they added that I think will be greatly appreciated by hardcore fans of the series.
Akuma Fighting a car, Pure badassery.

The beauty of Playing with other people/online is that there is always going to be that one guy that will be better then you, and you train the insides and outs of the game, and you get your own little group of friends who play and there is a little sense of community that builds within. I can't say that I have ever experienced the fighting games in arcades, but it sure has "spread" with this new online aspect in the home consoles.

Websites like Shoryuken and FADC exist for these fighting games, and I have to say. It's possibly the greatest gaming community I have ever been in "touch" with. It's the drive to get better and beat your friends is something great that cant be found in modern Day shooters like Call of Duty or Halo.Fighting games are tests of pure skill, wit and how to outwit your opponent and keeping your head cool. This separates the genre from all others, this is pure competitive gameplay. Which anyone can get into, anyone can take on the greats with this console online aspect. And I have  to say, in about Six hours with this game yesterday, I went from being a completely shit Scrub to a mediocre Scrub. Hah.
It's the taste of glory when you get your first win, it's something that you just DON'T get with other games.
This is why Super Street Fighter IV is possibly the BEST fighting game to have ever come out. Ever. In terms of advancements in gameplay and fundamentally changing things, I'm not sure if balance is an Issue in SSFIV yet. It's too early to Call. But this and Guilty Gear Accent core Plus are possibly the best fighting games on the market right now.
And ontop of that. It's being sold brand new at a Budget price, there is really no excuse for picking up this fantastic fighter.

EDIT: oh, and on another note, check out these two badass indie street fighter short movies.

Demon's Souls finally headed to Europe in June

I Dont normally post about things like news and announcements as such. But this just takes the cake.
I've been thinking of importing Demon's souls for just over half a year. But thats aside the point...
Just to review. In America it was published by ATLUS. In Japan it was published my Sony Computer Entertainment. And in Europe it's getting published by Namco-Bandai...

By now anyone in the gaming "scene" has heard of Demon's souls and how it's soul suckingly hard, brutal, and yet. Rewarding. After the game sold well in Japan it was brought to Sony computer Emtertainment in America, they passed up on the offer of publishing Demon's souls over in America. So Atlus took the helm... And the game became a sleeper hit with the western audiences... If I am right it sold around 280000 Copies in America, with an expected 75000 sales... Sony Computer Entertainment later said that it was a "mistake" not bringing Demon's souls to America. So what I REALLY dont get is why on earth Namco-Bandai are localising this for the European folks. SCE has a solid new IP with this game from what I have heard. So why did they pass up on the oppurtunity to publish this in Europe? Lord knows.

To be fair I think that a game that has been out in Japan for over a year is coming to Europe JUST NOW?
It's similar to the whole Blazblue thing (took 9 months from US release to come over here). People wonder why they will not do well over here is that they just took too damn long to publish the game in that territory... hence all the hype around the game is gone and most of the community is gone.
But more importantly. It's headed to Europe!
I have already placed my preorder as soon as I saw the listing on Shopto. My expectations for this are extremely high. I hope From Software does not dissappoint with this.
Moreover, it's not just the single game. We are getting a Special edition similar to what the American Territories got. This time dubbed "Black Phantom edition" With a Red instead of Blue flame on the box art.
The release date on this baby is June 25th, more deatails later on today when Bamco is doing an "official" press release. So I will update anything if it's wrong.

I would cite my sources on this article but I'm too lazy. most of this is either from Kotaku, Destructoid or NeoGAF. So props to them.

First 7 mins of Gundam Unicorn... In Japanese.

It's no secret that I am a huge Gundam fanboy and do little girlish squeals when i see my
favourite mobile suit on screen, but this was NOT a squeal. It was a freaking ROAR.

Mobile suit gundam : Unicorn was originally a novel published in 2006, but Bandai
Entertainment decided to release an OVA (original Video animation) of it
Comprising of six (I assume they're long) Episodes.
They also said that this will be getting an international release, in English AND Japanese.
Again, the USA has the upper hand as you can preorder the Blu-Ray  Here.
We other countris have to download it from the Playstation store, but I would have
preferred it more to have a Blu-Ray but... whatever.

They have released the first seven mins in japanese for our viewing pleasure.
even if you don't understand japanese, it's well worth a watch for the phenomenal
animation.
